Hearsay Social Hires Its First CFO

Congress Presses Uber And Lyft On Driver Background ChecksHearsay Social, a Sequoia-backed startup helping finance and insurance companies grow sales through social media, announced today that it has hired its first chief financial officer — William Salisbury (pictured above), who was previously CFO at AVAST Software.
It’s been just a couple of weeks since Hearsay rolled out an expanded product suite for financial advisors. CEO Clara Shih told me that this is going to be a big year for the company (which now has around 200 employees), and it needed a CFO to deal with the expected “host of complexities.” Not only is Hearsay “transitioning from a single product company to now being a multi product suite,” it’s also building its business overseas and building a small services team to help with product adoption in large enterprise customers.
Shih also suggested that the recent launch is just the latest in a series of “pivotal decisions” that seem to come up every 12 to 18 months for Hearsay. The original aim was to help businesses manage the social media presence of their local branches and franchises, but over time, it started to focus on large enterprises, and then specifically on the financial services and insurance industries.
“What happened was, we were spread too thin,” Shih said. By limiting itself to just a couple of industries, Hearsay could better develop machine learning technology focused on the social media needs of its customers. And now, with its latest pivotal decision (which I guess isn’t quite the same as calling them pivots), Hearsay has launched its Predictive Social Suite, going beyond social media tools by helping its clients track customers on their own websites and other channels.
Looking back on those decisions, Shih said, “In each case, we debated it ferociously within the company, which I think great companies do. … In terms of the big bets, I guess by definition they’ve worked out, otherwise we wouldn’t have kept going.”

Dropbox Hires Former Motorola Mobility Exec Vanessa Wittman As CFO

Cloud storage company Dropbox announced today it has hired Vanessa Wittman as its new finance chief, who will be replacing longtime CFO Sujay Jaswa. Wittman brings some public company experience, having served as CFO and SVP at Motorola Mobility after the company had been acquired by Google and during the company’s later sale to Lenovo. Prior to that she was CFO of Marsh & McLennan and had also held finance roles at Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, and others.
Meanwhile Jaswa, who has been on the Dropbox team since 2010, will be leaving the company at some point over the next few months. Previously an investor at New Enterprise Associates, Jaswa expects to return to the investing world after the transition.

Atlassian Hires New CFO As It Gears Up For An IPO

When private companies hire new CFOs with experience at a public company, chances are they are gearing up for a potential IPO. With Atlassian, the company behind tools like JIRA and HipChat, that’s clearly the case. The company today announced that it has hired Erik Bardman as its CFO. Bardman replaces C. Alex Estevez who served as the company’s CFO from 2011 to last October.
As Atlassian President Jay Simons told me earlier this week, Bardman is a great culture fit, and he brings the kind of experience to the table that a company like Atlassian needs. Bardman started his career at General Electric and has since held a number of positions at eBay, including as the CFO of eBay’s international business and eBay Marketplaces, as well as at Roku, where he was CFO from May 2013 to September 2014. He joined Trulia’s board of directors in the month leading up to that company’s IPO in 2012.
