Google Now Includes Google+ Photos In Drive

Andreessen-Backed Teleport Launches A Mobile Search Engine For Globally Nomadic Tech WorkersGoogle has begun showing photos uploaded via Google+ in Google Drive, where they can be managed via a new Google Photos tab, or stored in folders alongside other kinds of files easily. The inclusion of Photos and Videos in Drive is one sign that Google is moving to part out the Google+ social network into its key components, and is good news for mobile photographers.
Google+ has one of the best automatic Photos tools in the business, thanks to its automatic enhancements of color balance and exposure, as well as other tweaks and organizational tools. The move to include your Google+ library in Drive likely helps make it much more accessible and useful for those who are already using Google+ as a backup destination for pics snapped on their mobile device. You can also now auto backup directly to Drive, bypassing the need to use Google+ for that at all.
Putting the Photos menu in Drive and populating it with Google+ images and videos means you won’t have to change your practices to take advantage of the switch, and the feature should already be available on Android, iOS and the web.

Apple Brings Photos App To The OS X Public Beta Program

Tomorrow Is The Barcelona Meet Up And Pitch-Off!Apple has launched the preview software of its upcoming Photos app for OS X in the public beta channel, using its new AppleSeed program that invites members of the general public to test Apple’s major software releases before they become more widely available. The Photos app debuted in the Developer Preview version of OS X back at the beginning of February, and we provided an early look at the software then. Apple said at the time that it would arrive via the AppleSeed program in advance of a general release this spring.
Those who are participating in the Apple public beta for OS X can download the latest 10.10.3 build now, which includes the Photos app pre-installed, to give it a try. Apple’s new photo management software for the desktop is a much faster, much leaner version approach to the task than is existing iPhoto software, with an interface that borrows heavily from the version of Photos currently available on iOS, and with a lot of great automatic and manual filter options.
The graduation of the app to the public beta program means it’s getting closer to a general launch, but it’s not yet clear when exactly that will happen. Apple has a special event planned for next Monday, at which it is widely expected to debut its Apple Watch. The wearable does have a photos tie-in, so perhaps we could see the minor point update for OS X arrive then, but if not, we’ll almost certainly see a broader launch in time for this year’s WWDC.

Apple could be building a car, apparently, so naturally we had to talk about that. It seems likely Apple would want to anticipate a future where cars fall within a tech company’s purview, so in that regard it isn’t surprising. But Apple working on something doesn’t always equal Apple shipping something, no matter how much we may wish it were true.

We also cover Photos, which is very much a real thing, and which will ship to OS X users starting this spring via a free update to Yosemite. It’s a solid improvement on iPhoto, which is really beginning to show its age and has trouble with libraries that are dwarfed by the collections of many mobile photographers out there. Our first impressions reveal that Apple is probably doing exactly what it needs to with its new desktop picture program.
Finally, we tackle iOS 9, which reports this week suggest could be a Snow Leopard-style update designed to improve the general performance and reliability of Apple’s mobile platform. That could be a very good thing, and this might be the perfect year for Apple to do it, too, given the success of the iPhone 6 and the position of its closest competitors.
